D Gukesh Faces Criticism from Chess Legends Amid Performance Struggles

OSLO, Norway — Reigning world chess champion D Gukesh has found himself under the scrutiny of some of the greatest names in chess history, including Garry Kasparov, Anatoly Karpov, and Magnus Carlsen, following a significant dip in form since his historic victory in December 2024.

As Gukesh approaches his 20th birthday this week, he candidly acknowledged the validity of the criticism directed at him, admitting that his recent performances have been “way below expectations.” Once a rising star, Gukesh made headlines last year by becoming the youngest player to win the FIDE Candidates Tournament and the World Championship, alongside clinching individual gold on Board 1 at the Olympiad.

However, the past year has seen a stark contrast in his performance. Gukesh suffered a disappointing hat-trick of defeats at the Grand Swiss and faced an early exit in the third round of the World Cup held in his home country. His struggles continued at other prestigious events, including the World Rapid and Blitz Championships, the Sinquefield Cup, and Tata Steel Chess.

In a press conference ahead of the Norway Chess tournament, Gukesh reflected on his recent challenges. “Most of the criticism I don’t see,” he stated. “But there is some criticism that I have heard, and I think it is fair. I have not been performing well in the last 18 months, and even I would say the same thing. They have the right to say what they feel, and I have the right to do my job as best as I can.”

The young champion’s decline in form has prompted him to adjust his competitive schedule as he prepares to defend his title against Javokhir Sindarov, who recently dominated the Candidates Tournament. Gukesh opted out of this year’s Grand Chess Tour but is set to participate as a wildcard in the Super Rapid and Blitz Poland, with plans to compete in Zagreb later this summer.

As he gears up for the Norway Chess tournament, which has relocated to Oslo this year, Gukesh is eager to reclaim his former glory. He will be looking to repeat his dramatic victory over Carlsen at the same event last year, a match that showcased his immense talent and potential.

With the chess world watching closely, Gukesh’s journey back to form will be a compelling narrative in the months to come. As he faces the challenges ahead, the young champion remains determined to silence his critics and reaffirm his status as a formidable force in the chess arena.
