Gukesh’s Quest for Victory Continues at Prague International Chess Festival
Prague, Czech Republic – World champion D Gukesh’s search for his first victory at the Prague International Chess Festival extended into a fourth round stalemate on Saturday, as he battled to a 72-move draw against Czech No. 1 David Navara. Meanwhile, Dutch grandmaster Jorden van Foreest seized the tournament lead with his third win in four games.
Gukesh, playing with the white pieces, opened with a Ruy Lopez Berlin, aiming to gain an early advantage. However, Navara’s steadfast defense proved impenetrable. After a tense struggle, the game transitioned into a rook-and-pawns endgame, where both players ultimately agreed to split the point with only kings remaining on the board.
With five rounds left in the 10-player round-robin tournament, van Foreest now leads the standings with three points, following his victory over Uzbekistan’s Nodirbek Yakubboev. The Dutchman showcased remarkable resilience, capitalizing on a critical error from Yakubboev in a complex middlegame.
Trailing van Foreest are Nodirbek Abdusattorov and Navara, both with 2.5 points. Gukesh, along with defending champion Aravindh Chithambaram, Hans Moke Niemann, and Parham Maghsoodloo, finds himself tied at 1.5 points each.
Chithambaram faced a challenging match against Germany’s Vincent Keymer, who launched a kingside attack early on. Despite Chithambaram’s efforts with the Philidor Defence, he lost a pawn and subsequently a bishop, leading to a one-sided defeat.
In other matches, Niemann drew with Maghsoodloo, while David Anton Guijarro shared points with Abdusattorov.
In the Challengers section, Divya Deshmukh managed a draw against tournament leader Vanclav Finek of the Czech Republic, while Surya Shekhar Ganguly also held local player Stepan Hrbek to a draw. Finek leads the Challengers with three points, while Deshmukh and Ganguly have 1.5 and one point, respectively.
As the tournament approaches its halfway mark, Gukesh will be looking to convert promising positions into victories in the remaining rounds to keep his title defense alive. The chess world will be watching closely as the competition heats up in Prague.
