Zagreb Set to Host Thrilling Chess Showdown as D Gukesh Returns for Rapid and Blitz Tournament

ZAGREB — The chess world is abuzz as reigning world champion D Gukesh prepares to make his much-anticipated return to competitive play at the Zagreb Rapid and Blitz Tournament, kicking off this Wednesday. Although Gukesh has taken a sabbatical from classical chess, his commitment to major events remains unwavering, and he is set to face off against some of the globe’s top players.

This tournament is part of the prestigious Grand Chess Tour (GCT), a premier platform that unites elite chess talent. The Zagreb event marks the third installment of the GCT this year, with three more tournaments lined up in the coming months.

Joining Gukesh in the fray is Indian prodigy R Praggnanandhaa, who recently made headlines by clinching victory at the Norway Chess, defeating none other than world number one Magnus Carlsen. Praggnanandhaa’s performance has set high expectations for his rapid and blitz capabilities, especially after his historic win, making him the first Indian to achieve this feat.

The tournament will feature a total of nine rounds of rapid chess and 18 rounds of blitz. In the rapid format, players will earn two points for a win and one point for a draw, while in blitz, a win will net one point and a draw will yield half a point.

Despite stepping back from classical events, Gukesh’s decision to participate as a wild card in the rapid and blitz sections has generated excitement among fans and analysts alike. He is also preparing to defend his title against Javokhir Sindarov later this year, adding an extra layer of intrigue to his performance in Zagreb.

The competition will also see formidable players like Germany’s Vincent Keymer, Dutch star Anish Giri, and French sensation Alireza Firouzja, all of whom are expected to be strong contenders. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France and Jorden van Foreest, who was added to the lineup at the last minute, are also anticipated to make significant impacts.

Completing this impressive roster are Nodribek Abdusattorov from Uzbekistan, Ivan Saric of Serbia, and Romania’s Deac Bogdan-Daniel, ensuring that chess enthusiasts will have plenty to watch over the next week.

As the chess community gears up for this exciting tournament, all eyes will be on Zagreb, where strategy, skill, and speed will collide in a battle for supremacy on the chessboard.
