Gukesh Aims to Reclaim Form at Norway Chess Ahead of World Championship Title Defense
Gukesh Set to Shine at Norway Chess Ahead of World Championship Defense
Oslo, Norway – World champion D Gukesh is gearing up to reclaim his competitive edge as he embarks on his campaign at the prestigious Norway Chess tournament this Monday. The young Indian prodigy faces a formidable challenge against an elite field, including former world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen, as he prepares for his title defense later this year.
The picturesque backdrop of Oslo, with its stunning fjords, sets the stage for this high-stakes chess showdown. The tournament will take place at the iconic Deichman Bjørvika public library, located just a stone’s throw from the Nobel Peace Center. This year’s event features six of the world’s top players in both the Open and Women’s sections, with a strong Indian contingent aiming to break the country’s long wait for a title.
Gukesh, alongside fellow Indian star R Praggnanandhaa, will represent India in the Open category, while the women’s field includes renowned players like Koneru Humpy and World Cup winner Divya Deshmukh. The Indian team is determined to make a mark in a tournament where Carlsen has historically dominated, having won a record seven times.
Despite a challenging season, Gukesh enters the tournament with high hopes. After a disappointing sixth-place finish at the Grand Chess Tour’s Super Rapid and Blitz event in Poland, he is eager to regain his momentum. Memories of his stunning victory over Carlsen in last year’s tournament, which famously prompted the Norwegian’s table-bang in frustration, could serve as motivation for the young champion.
Meanwhile, Praggnanandhaa appears well-prepared, having recently faced off against top competitors like Vincent Keymer and Wesley So at the Superbet Chess Classic in Bucharest. His strong performances there could provide the momentum needed to excel in Oslo.
In the women’s section, Koneru Humpy aims to challenge reigning world champion Ju Wenjun after taking a break from the Candidates tournament. This time away may have rejuvenated her, allowing her to approach the competition with fresh energy.
Kjell Madland, CEO and founder of Norway Chess, expressed excitement about the event’s relocation from Stavanger to Oslo, aiming to broaden its appeal. The tournament format features six players in each category, competing over 10 rounds, with a unique scoring system that ensures every match produces a decisive outcome.
As the tournament kicks off during Norway’s “Red Day” weekend, the serene atmosphere of Oslo is expected to complement the intense focus required by the players. With the stakes high and the competition fierce, all eyes will be on Gukesh and his fellow competitors as they vie for glory in one of the chess world’s most prestigious events.
