Gukesh Withdraws from Grand Chess Tour, to Compete as Wildcard in Rapid & Blitz Events
Gukesh Withdraws from Grand Chess Tour to Focus on Recovery
Mumbai, March 31 (IANS) — In a significant development for the chess community, India’s reigning World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju has announced his withdrawal from the remaining events of the 2026 Grand Chess Tour (GCT). This decision comes as Gukesh aims to recover from a series of disappointing performances.
The Grand Chess Tour organizers confirmed the update on Tuesday, revealing that Gukesh will still participate as a wildcard in the Rapid & Blitz tournaments scheduled in Warsaw and Zagreb.
In a heartfelt statement, Gukesh expressed his sentiments: “My performance in the last few events has been quite disappointing, not just for me, but for all of you who support me. To regain my best form, my team and I have decided that I should compete with slightly less intensity over the next few months. This means skipping long events away from home to allow for more dedicated training time.”
Gukesh’s decision was met with understanding from the GCT organizers. “I’m very grateful for their support,” he added. “I’m not planning to play any other events during the Grand Chess Tour schedule but I will certainly be back for the full Grand Chess Tour in the future.”
In light of Gukesh’s withdrawal, Uzbekistan’s Javokhir Sindarov will step in as a full tour participant, having earned his place through impressive recent performances. Sindarov will compete in Warsaw, Bucharest, and both Saint Louis events, marking a significant opportunity for the rising star.
Alex Onischuk, Deputy Executive Director of GCT, commented on the situation: “We respect Gukesh’s decision and welcome his participation in the Rapid & Blitz events in Warsaw and Zagreb. At the same time, we’re excited to have Javokhir Sindarov join the full Tour. He has demonstrated exceptional form at the highest level, and we look forward to his participation throughout the 2026 season.”
The 2026 GCT season promises to showcase the world’s elite players across a series of prestigious international events. The upcoming schedule includes:
- Super Rapid & Blitz Poland: May 3-10, 2026, Warsaw, Poland
- Super Chess Classic Romania: May 12-24, 2026, Bucharest, Romania
- Super Rapid & Blitz Croatia: June 29-July 6, 2026, Zagreb, Croatia
- Saint Louis Rapid & Blitz: July 31-August 7, 2026, Saint Louis, USA
- Sinquefield Cup: August 8-21, 2026, Saint Louis, USA
- GCT Finals: August 21-28, 2026, Saint Louis, USA
As Gukesh takes this time to regroup and refine his skills, he will be closely watching the Candidates 2026, eager to see who will challenge him in the World Championships Final Match.
