Gukesh Reflects on Mixed Results at Grand Chess Tour Poland: “Tournament Could Have Been Better”
D Gukesh Kicks Off Grand Chess Tour with Mixed Results in Poland
Poland – May 8, 2026 – Reigning world chess champion D Gukesh has made a notable start to the Grand Chess Tour, showcasing his skills with impressive victories over formidable opponents. The 20-year-old Indian prodigy finished the Super Rapid and Blitz Poland Tournament on a high note, defeating Fide Candidates winner Javokhir Sindarov and renowned Grandmaster Fabiano Caruana. However, despite these triumphs, Gukesh expressed dissatisfaction with his overall performance.
After his significant win against Sindarov, Gukesh continued to build momentum with another solid victory over Caruana. Yet, he concluded the tournament in joint fourth place, trailing the winner, Hans Niemann, by four points. Gukesh’s final score of 9/9 reflects his potential but also highlights missed opportunities throughout the event.
“I was playing well, but I missed a few chances,” Gukesh remarked during an interview with the Saint Louis Chess Club. “There were also games where I was in trouble and managed to save it. The tournament could have been better.”
The young champion emphasized the importance of rhythm in rapid chess, stating, “Rapid and blitz are about rhythm! If you find it, you can crush opponents.” As he gears up for the blitz portion of the tournament, scheduled for May 8 and 9, Gukesh humorously noted his strategy: “In blitz, all you have to do is play fast and pray. That’s going to be my strategy.”
With 18 rounds of blitz play ahead, the final outcome of the Super Rapid & Blitz Poland 2026 remains uncertain. As Gukesh looks to refine his approach, fans and chess enthusiasts alike are eager to see if he can reclaim his top form and secure a stronger finish in the upcoming rounds.
Stay tuned for more updates as the tournament unfolds!
