Gukesh Dommaraju’s Struggles Continue at Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour: Loses Quarter-Final Game to Fabiano Caruana

Gukesh Dommaraju’s struggles at the Weissenhaus leg of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour continued as the world champion suffered a defeat in the first game of the quarter-final to Fabiano Caruana on Sunday.

Despite playing nine games in the rapid time control before Sunday, Gukesh failed to secure a single win. Sneaking into the quarter-finals after finishing ahead of Vladimir Fedoseev and Levon Aronian, Gukesh faced a tough challenge against Caruana.

Known for excelling in the longest time control events, Gukesh was expected to perform better in the classical game on Sunday. However, his loss to Caruana now leaves him with just one game to save his campaign.

The knockout stage of the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour in Weissenhaus witnessed four out of the five games played ending in decisive results. Gukesh’s defeat to Caruana, along with wins for Magnus Carlsen and Vincent Keymer, set the stage for an intense competition.

With players only finding out the opening position 15 minutes before the game, the freestyle chess event adds an element of unpredictability and challenge. Gukesh and Caruana will face off again on Monday, with the hopes of turning the tide in their favor.

Stay tuned for more updates on Gukesh’s journey in the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour!
