Health Canada Issues Urgent Recall for Magnetic Chess Game and Fidget Pen Due to Serious Risks to Children

February 26, 2023 – Ottawa, ON – Health Canada has issued a critical recall warning for two consumer products that pose significant health risks to children. The products in question—a Magnetic Chess Game and a Fidget Magnetic Pen—contain small, powerful magnets that can be easily swallowed, leading to potentially life-threatening complications.

Both items are distributed by Ozerty Canada and have been flagged for their dangerous design. The Magnetic Chess Game features small, spherical magnets that can detach easily, while the Fidget Magnetic Pen includes multiple detachable magnetic segments. Health Canada warns that if more than one magnet is ingested in a short period, they can attract each other while moving through the intestines, resulting in severe blockages or even tearing of intestinal walls.

The recall notice specifies that the Magnetic Chess Game is sold in two types of packaging: a blue box labeled ‘Magnetic’ and a red Merry Christmas box with ‘magnet’ displayed in lowercase letters. Each game contains approximately 20 loose magnets, a string, a small drawstring bag, and instructions for play.

As of the recall date, Ozerty Canada has reported no incidents or injuries related to these products in Canada. However, Health Canada strongly advises consumers to stop using the recalled items immediately, keep them away from children, and contact Ozerty Canada for a refund.

The same risks apply to the Fidget Magnetic Pen, which consists of pen refills, caps, tips, a clip, and a case, all featuring magnetic components. The kit may also include small steel balls that can be rearranged with the magnetic segments, further increasing the risk of ingestion.

Parents and caregivers are urged to take this warning seriously and ensure that these products are removed from homes to prevent any potential accidents. For further information, consumers can reach out to Ozerty Canada via email at [email protected].

Stay safe and informed—your child’s health may depend on it.
