A quick draw against Hans Niemann in the seventh and final round on Wednesday sealed a disappointing fate for the reigning world champion, who finished last in the eight-player tournament with a mere two points and no victories to his name.
This tournament marked Gukesh’s first appearance in Chennai since he claimed the world title in December 2024, a moment that promised a triumphant return to familiar grounds. However, the reality was starkly different. After suffering two exhausting defeats in the preceding rounds, Gukesh’s final encounter offered neither the redemption he sought nor any further setbacks, culminating in a subdued end to a tournament that had spiraled out of his control.
