Nihal Sarin Shines Bright in Esports Chess World Cup and Nations Cup Qualification

NEW DELHI: It’s been a week of remarkable achievements for Indian Grandmaster Nihal Sarin, who has officially qualified for the Esports Chess World Cup (EWC) 2026 and made history as the first Indian to receive a direct invitation for the inaugural Esports Nations Cup (ENC) 2026. At just 21 years old, Nihal is set to represent Team India Esports in a groundbreaking event that promises to elevate the profile of chess in the digital age.

Nihal, alongside his S8UL teammate Aravindh Chithambaram, has secured a spot in the EWC 2026 main event. However, it is Nihal who stands out as India’s sole direct invitee for the ENC, a distinction earned through his stellar performance on the Champions Chess Tour (CCT) 2025-2026 Leaderboard.

Understanding the Selection Process

While Aravindh Chithambaram boasts an impressive 1,017 points on the CCT leaderboard, he missed out on the direct ENC invite due to the specific criteria used for selection. The ENC evaluated individual performances in designated online qualifiers, and the majority of Aravindh’s points were accrued from an offline victory at DreamHack Atlanta—an event not considered for the ENC selection.

This situation mirrors that of Russian player Andrey Esipenko, who also excelled at DreamHack Atlanta but lost out on a direct invite to Ian Nepomniachtchi due to similar circumstances. In contrast, Nihal adeptly navigated the online CCT circuit, amassing crucial points through consistent performances in events like the Speed Chess Championship and the Titled Tuesday Grand Prix. His strategic gameplay earned him a total of 139 points, placing him among the top six in the official ENC Chess rankings.

A Unique Opportunity for India

The ENC 2026 has a strict model to ensure global representation, allowing only one direct invite per country based on leaderboard rankings. However, this does not preclude the possibility of another Indian player qualifying through regional competitions. The ENC will feature 64 direct invitees, including chess legends like Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura, while 61 additional players will qualify through regional qualifiers, with India’s set for June 6-7 and June 13-14, 2026.

The main event is scheduled for November 2 to 8, 2026, where 128 players will compete for a staggering prize pool of USD 600,000 (approximately INR 5.7 crore).

The Future of Chess in Esports

In an exclusive interview with Times of India, Fabian Scheuermann, Chief Games Officer at The Esports Foundation, highlighted the growing intersection of chess and esports. “Platforms like Chess.com and Twitch, alongside a new generation of Grandmasters, have brought chess into the same digital environment as esports,” he stated. “We aimed to create a system that reflects both performance and opportunity, ensuring equal representation while showcasing the best chess players globally.”

As Nihal Sarin prepares for these prestigious events, his achievements not only mark a personal milestone but also signify a new era for Indian chess on the global stage. With the potential for more Indian players to join him, the excitement surrounding the ENC and EWC is palpable, promising to captivate audiences and elevate the game to new heights.
