In a surprising political move, Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced on Sunday that he intends to nominate Judit Polgar, widely celebrated as the greatest female chess player of all time, for the largely ceremonial position of Hungary’s next President. This announcement comes on the heels of President Tamas Sulyok signing a constitutional amendment that effectively ends his term, paving the way for a new head of state.

Magyar took to Facebook to express his belief that Polgar, 49, could serve as a unifying figure for the nation. He stated, “I will meet her tomorrow, and will ask whether she is ready to serve our country in a new role until the new constitution is passed.” The Prime Minister emphasized Polgar’s legacy, noting, “Her name has been synonymous with talent and perseverance for decades.”

The proposal follows Magyar’s decisive victory over former Prime Minister Viktor Orban in April, a win that he claims has granted him a strong mandate to dismantle Orban’s entrenched power structures. Polgar, along with her sisters Zsuzsa (Susan) and Zsofia (Sofia), made history in 1988 by leading Hungary’s female chess team to victory at the Chess Olympiad, breaking the Soviet Union’s long-standing dominance in the sport. Renowned for her groundbreaking achievements, Polgar is the only woman to have surpassed the 2700 Elo rating, a benchmark that signifies the “Super GM” status in chess.
