BUDAPEST, July 20 — In a surprising twist to Hungary’s political landscape, the ruling Tisza party has thrown its unanimous support behind chess icon Judit Polgar for the presidency. The decision, announced by parliamentary group leader Andrea Bujdoso on Monday, sets the stage for a potential nomination at the party’s next meeting.
Prime Minister Peter Magyar, who recently ended the 16-year reign of Viktor Orban’s Fidesz party, expressed his intention to invite Polgar, widely celebrated as the greatest female chess player in history, to assume the largely ceremonial role of president. This appointment would be temporary, lasting until a new constitution is established.
The push for a new president comes on the heels of Tamas Sulyok’s resignation, following a constitutional amendment passed by the Tisza party. Magyar’s administration is focused on dismantling the power structures established by Orban, a mission he claims has received a strong mandate from the electorate after his landslide victory in April.
With a commanding two-thirds majority in parliament, the Tisza party is poised to elect a new president who will serve until the new constitution is enacted, or for a maximum of five years. Bujdoso praised Polgar, 49, as “patriotic, honourable, empathetic, brave, outstanding, and dedicated in her profession,” emphasizing her ability to embody the nation’s unity.
“The president of the republic must be a person who guards the unity of the nation and constitutionality,” Magyar stated during a parliamentary session, underscoring the importance of this role in the current political climate.
Polgar, who made history as the only female player to break into the world’s top 10 rankings in the male-dominated sport, has also achieved the remarkable feat of surpassing a 2700 rating, a benchmark for “Super Grandmaster” status. While she could not be reached for comment, her potential presidency marks a significant moment for both Hungarian politics and the representation of women in leadership roles.
As the Tisza party prepares for its next meeting, all eyes will be on Polgar, whose nomination could herald a new chapter in Hungary’s political narrative.
