FIDE Launches Total Chess World Championship Tour: Pilot Edition Set for Budapest in November 2026

The chess world is abuzz with anticipation as the inaugural pilot edition of the FIDE-approved Total Chess World Championship Tour is set to take place in Budapest, Hungary, from November 10 to 21, 2026. This groundbreaking event, conceptualized by Norway Chess and endorsed by the international chess federation, promises to redefine competitive chess by integrating three distinct formats: Fast Classic, Rapid, and Blitz.
The Budapest event will serve as a testing ground for a championship format that is slated for a global rollout in 2027. The inaugural season, commencing in March 2027, is expected to feature multiple tournaments across various host cities, culminating in the crowning of the FIDE World Combined Champion.
Unlike traditional chess tournaments that focus on a single time control, the Total Chess World Championship Tour will evaluate players based on their cumulative performances across all three formats. This innovative approach aims to identify the most versatile and complete chess player, making for a more dynamic and engaging spectator experience.
FIDE has also announced that the Total Chess World Championship Tour will play a crucial role in the qualification pathway for the Candidates Tournament, which determines the challenger for the classical World Championship. Under the qualification system for the 2026-27 Tour, the top two players in the final standings will secure direct entry into the Candidates Tournament in 2028.
“From November 10-21, 2026, the world’s elite, including reigning champion Magnus Carlsen, will clash at Budapest’s iconic Anantara New York Palace Hotel across Blitz, Rapid, and Fast Classic formats,” a Total Chess World Championship Tour release stated.
Kjell Madland, CEO of Norway Chess and Total Chess, expressed his enthusiasm for the new format, stating, “By bringing together Fast Classic, Rapid, and Blitz under one championship, we’re creating a more complete sporting test while making elite chess more exciting and accessible for fans around the world.”
Budapest, with its rich chess heritage, has been chosen as the launch city for this ambitious project. “This event will set the benchmark for the global championship that begins in March 2027,” Madland added.
FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich emphasized the potential of the Total Chess World Championship Tour to attract new audiences and enhance the commercial value of the sport. “As chess continues to evolve, FIDE’s role is to embrace innovation that strengthens our sport while respecting its rich tradition,” he said.
The Tour has already garnered support from high-profile figures, including Norwegian football superstar Erling Haaland and Olympic cross-country skiing champion Johannes Høsflot Klæbo, signaling a growing interest in the sport.
