Budapest to Host Inaugural Total Chess World Championship Tour
New Delhi – The chess world is abuzz with excitement as the official pilot edition of the FIDE-approved Total Chess World Championship Tour is set to take place in Budapest, Hungary, from November 10 to 21, 2026. This groundbreaking event, conceptualized by Norway Chess and endorsed by the international chess federation, promises to redefine competitive chess by integrating three distinct formats: Fast Classic, Rapid, and Blitz.
The Budapest tournament will serve as a testing ground for the championship format, which is slated for a global rollout in 2027. The inaugural season, commencing in March 2027, aims to feature multiple tournaments across various host cities, culminating in the crowning of the FIDE World Combined Champion.
Unlike traditional chess events that focus on a single time control, the Total Chess World Championship Tour will aggregate results from all three formats, determining the overall champion based on cumulative performances. This innovative approach is designed to showcase a player’s versatility and skill across different styles of play.
FIDE has also revealed that the Total Chess World Championship Tour will play a crucial role in the qualification pathway for the Candidates Tournament, which determines the challenger for the classical World Championship. Under the new qualification system, the top two players in the final Tour standings will secure direct entry into the 2028 Candidates Tournament.
From November 10-21, the world’s elite players, including reigning world champion Magnus Carlsen, will compete at Budapest’s iconic Anantara New York Palace Hotel. “This event will determine chess’ most complete player,” stated a release from the Total Chess World Championship Tour.
Kjell Madland, CEO of Norway Chess and Total Chess, emphasized the significance of combining all three formats in a single tournament. “This will create a more complete sporting test and make elite chess more exciting,” he said. “The Total Chess World Championship Tour is built on the belief that the world’s best chess player should excel across every format of the game.”
Budapest, steeped in chess heritage, has been chosen as the launch city for this ambitious project. “This event will set the benchmark for the global championship that begins in March 2027,” Madland added.
FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich expressed optimism about the Tour’s potential to attract new audiences and enhance the commercial value of chess. “As chess continues to evolve, FIDE’s role is to embrace innovation that strengthens our sport while respecting its rich tradition,” he stated. “We are convinced that the tour will draw in new audiences, commercial partners, and greater media interest.”
The Total Chess World Championship Tour has already garnered support from high-profile figures, including Norwegian football superstar Erling Haaland and Olympic cross-country skiing champion Johannes Høsflot Klæbo.
