India Celebrates as VS Rathanvel Becomes the Nation’s 99th Grandmaster
Guwahati, July 18, 2026 — In a momentous achievement for Indian chess, VS Rathanvel has officially become the country’s 99th Grandmaster, crossing the coveted 2500 Elo rating mark at the Guwahati Smart City International Open 2026. The 25-year-old’s remarkable feat brings India tantalizingly close to reaching the historic milestone of 100 Grandmasters.
Rathanvel’s journey to this pinnacle has been a testament to his resilience and dedication. Coached by renowned grandmasters including Vishnu Prasanna, Narayanan Srinath, Shyam Sundar, and Sundarrajan Kidambi, he completed his three GM norms in 2022 but faced numerous challenges in achieving the necessary rating. “I came very close on multiple occasions, so it becomes very depressing because chess is a mental sport and you suddenly start doubting yourself,” he shared with PTI.
The significance of this achievement is underscored by the historical context. India’s first Grandmaster, the legendary Viswanathan Anand, earned his title in 1987 at the Shakti Finance International Chess Tournament in Coimbatore, Rathanvel’s hometown. Anand’s legacy has inspired countless players, and Rathanvel’s success is a continuation of that rich tradition.
Rathanvel’s path to Grandmaster status has not been without its hurdles. After winning a bronze medal at the World Youth U10 Championship, he established himself as one of India’s strongest International Masters. However, the pressure of nearing the rating requirement took a toll on his mental game. “Finally crossing the 2500 rating feels very satisfying,” he remarked, expressing relief at being able to play without the constant worry of his rating.
Though a qualified mechanical engineer, Rathanvel has fully committed to a professional chess career. His parents run a wedding card printing business in Coimbatore, and he has been training independently while also coaching students online and competing in European leagues. He began his chess journey at the age of six at the Kovai Kids Chess Academy, steadily climbing the ranks in India’s competitive chess circuit.
Looking ahead, Rathanvel aims to secure invitations to stronger tournaments, which he believes will enhance his performance. “By September, I’ll start planning the major events I want to play,” he stated, reflecting his ambition and determination.
The All India Chess Federation (AICF) president Nitin Narang congratulated Rathanvel, emphasizing the significance of this milestone for Indian chess. “Grandmaster No. 99 for Bharat! Heartiest congratulations to Rathanvel V S on successfully completing all the requirements for the prestigious Grandmaster title. India now stands just one Grandmaster away from the historic milestone of 100,” Narang said.
