Indian-Origin Chess Prodigy Bodhana Sivanandan Crowned England’s Top Female Player at Just 11

North London, April 3, 2026 — In a remarkable achievement that has captured the attention of the chess world, 11-year-old Bodhana Sivanandan has officially become England’s top-rated female chess player, boasting an impressive FIDE rating of 2366. This milestone places her not only at the pinnacle of English women’s chess but also within the top 100 female players globally, currently ranked 72nd.

Bodhana, whose parents emigrated from Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu to England in 2007, has made waves in the chess community since she first picked up the game during the COVID-19 lockdown. The young prodigy discovered a chess set in a bag her father intended to discard, sparking a passion that has quickly transformed into extraordinary talent.

Her rise to the top has seen her surpass seasoned competitors, including four-time British women’s champion Lan Yao, who is 25. The English Chess Federation celebrated her achievement in a recent press release, highlighting her rapid ascent in the chess hierarchy.

Former British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who shares Indian heritage with Bodhana, expressed his admiration on social media. “Huge congratulations to Bodhana Sivanandan on becoming England’s top female chess player at just 11 years old. We once played each other in the Downing Street garden. Let’s just say her success has not come as a shock,” he posted on ‘X’.

Bodhana’s accolades include being named a Woman International Master last year and achieving a stunning victory against Ukraine’s former world champion, Grandmaster Mariya Muzychuk, at the European Club Cup in Rhodes, Greece.

Richard Walsh, CEO of the English Chess Federation, praised Bodhana’s impact on the sport. “She is blazing a trail not just for women and girls in the game, but for all chess players in England. Across all sports, she must be one of the most prodigious talents England has ever produced,” he stated. “We cannot wait to see what she can do in her career. Bodhana has worked so hard, her family have worked so hard, and now she is competing at the highest level flying the flag.”

As Bodhana continues to break barriers and set new records, the chess community eagerly anticipates her future endeavors, hoping she will inspire a new generation of players.
