Gukesh Climbs to Joint Second in Grand Chess Tour Croatia as Alireza Extends Lead

Gukesh Climbs to Joint Second in Grand Chess Tour Croatia

Zagreb, Croatia – Indian chess prodigy D. Gukesh showcased his prowess on the chessboard, defeating Dutch Grandmaster Anish Giri in a thrilling final match of the day, propelling him to a joint second position after Day Two of the Grand Chess Tour in Zagreb.

Gukesh, the youngest-ever world champion, capitalized on his white pieces in a Ruy Lopez exchange variation, launching a relentless attack against Giri’s king. The Dutch Grandmaster, of Nepalese origin, struggled to find his footing, ultimately succumbing to Gukesh’s strategic play. This victory marked a significant turnaround for Gukesh, who had faced an uncharacteristic loss earlier in the day against Romania’s Deac Bogdan-Daniel.

Currently, Iranian Grandmaster Alireza Firouzja leads the tournament with an impressive 10 points out of a possible 12, extending his lead by three points over a tightly contested field. Gukesh shares the second spot with Germany’s Vincent Keymer, France’s Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, and Bogdan-Daniel, all tied at seven points.

The day could have been even better for Gukesh’s compatriot, R. Praggnanandhaa, who faced a tough battle against Firouzja. After a fluctuating game that seemed destined for a draw, Praggnanandhaa made a critical blunder, allowing Firouzja to secure the win.

As the tournament progresses, Gukesh’s resilience and tactical acumen will be crucial, especially with three rounds remaining in the rapid section. The blitz games, set to unfold over the last two days, will ultimately determine the final standings.

Current Standings (After Round 6 Rapid):

  1. Firouzja Alireza (FRA) – 10 points
2-5. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA), D. Gukesh (IND), Deac Bogdan-Daniel (ROU), Vincent Keymer (GER) – 7 points each
6-8. R. Praggnanandhaa (IND), Anish Giri (NED), Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) – 6 points each
9-10. Jorden van Foreest (NED), Ivan Saric (CRO) – 2 points each

As the chess world watches closely, Gukesh’s journey in Zagreb continues to captivate fans and enthusiasts alike, promising more exciting matches in the days to come.
