Boxing World Cup: Deepak and Poonam Lead India’s Charge in China as Others Face Setbacks
Deepak and Poonam Shine as India Kicks Off Boxing World Cup Campaign in China
Beijing, China – The Indian boxing contingent had a mixed start at the Boxing World Cup (Stage 2) in China, with Deepak and Poonam emerging as the standout performers on the opening day. Both boxers advanced to the next round in their respective categories, while seven of their compatriots faced early exits.
In the women’s 54kg category, Poonam showcased her prowess with a commanding 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan’s Aziza Yokubova in the preliminary round of 32. Her performance not only highlighted her skill but also set a positive tone for India’s campaign.
Joining her in the next round, Deepak delivered an equally impressive display in the men’s 70kg division, defeating Turkmenistan’s Bayramdurdy Nurmuhammedov by a unanimous 5-0 decision. Both athletes will now look to build on their momentum as the tournament progresses.
However, the day was not as favorable for the remaining Indian boxers. In the preliminary round of 16, Rishi Singh (50kg) fell to Azerbaijan’s Subhan Mamedov, while Sanamacha Chanu Thokchom (75kg) lost to Canada’s Tammara Thibeault. Sawan Gill also bowed out after a defeat to Norway’s Omar Shiha in the men’s 90kg category.
In other matches, Anmol (60kg) suffered a narrow 2-3 defeat against the USA’s Salim Ellis Bey. Harsh Choudhary (90kg) faced a premature end to his bout, losing to Sweden’s Elwin Belezika via a referee stoppage due to injury in the third round.
The disappointment continued into the quarterfinals, where Naina lost to China’s Xiaomeng Wang in the women’s 80kg category, and Alfiya Tarannum Akram Khan Pathan was defeated by Poland’s Elzbieta Wojcik in the women’s 90+kg division.
As the competition unfolds, all eyes will be on Deepak and Poonam as they aim to continue India’s challenge in this prestigious tournament. With their strong performances, they have ignited hopes for a successful outing for the Indian boxing team in China.
