NEW DELHI: The landscape of Indian sports is undergoing a seismic shift as the nation embraces the digital frontier, with the launch of the India Rising: Road to EWC initiative. This groundbreaking collaboration between JioBLAST, Chess.com, and the Esports World Cup (EWC) Foundation marks a significant step in establishing a permanent qualification pathway for Indian players in the global esports arena.
At the heart of this initiative is Indian Grandmaster Vidit Gujrathi, who is set to face Dutch Grandmaster Benjamin Bok in a high-stakes match this Saturday. The winner will secure a coveted spot in the prestigious 14-player roster for the Esports Chess World Cup. Gujrathi, reflecting on India’s burgeoning chess scene, stated, “India is a powerhouse when it comes to chess. We have won the Olympiad gold medal, and our players are making waves globally. It makes perfect sense for us to have our own pathway to the Esports World Cup.”
The decision to spotlight chess as the inaugural sport for this initiative is no coincidence. With a rich history and a vibrant community, Indian chess is currently experiencing an unprecedented golden era. Gujrathi emphasized the importance of Indian representation in global esports, noting, “With the sheer number of players and the level of competition, India is among the top places in the chess world.”
Charlie Cowdrey, CEO of JioBLAST, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the initiative’s goal of creating lasting value for Indian players rather than just another tournament. “Chess felt like the natural place to start because India has one of the strongest chess ecosystems in the world,” he explained. “We wanted to create meaningful opportunities for our players.”
This strategic integration comes at a time when India boasts the second-largest gaming market globally, fueled by a youthful demographic—65% of the population is under 35. Mike McCabe, COO of the Esports World Cup Foundation, noted, “India is not just a future market; it is already shaping the future of esports. However, the journey to establish this new pipeline has not been without challenges. Cowdrey acknowledged the complexities of aligning multiple international partners, stating, “Finding the right balance between competitive integrity, accessibility, and entertainment required months of collaboration.”
The ultimate aim of the India Rising initiative is to bridge the historical gap that has existed for domestic talent aspiring to reach the highest international stages. With JioBLAST recently signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Maharashtra to foster digital innovation and youth engagement, the roadmap is clearly designed for sustainability. “The ultimate marker of success will be to see Indian players and teams winning on the global Esports World Cup stage in the years to come,” Cowdrey added.
As Gujrathi prepares for his pivotal match against Bok, he stands on the brink of making history as the fourth Indian to qualify for the EWC main event, joining the ranks of Aravindh Chithambaram, Nihal Sarin, and Arjun Erigaisi. “This is India’s moment,” McCabe concluded, underscoring the nation’s potential to become a defining force in global esports.
