Celebrate International Chess Day 2026: Join FIDE in Uniting the Global Chess Community
Embrace Creativity, Inclusion, and Social Change Through Chess!
Global Chess Community Gears Up for International Chess Day 2026
July 20, 2026 — The global chess community is set to unite in celebration of International Chess Day, a day dedicated to the game that transcends borders, cultures, and generations. Organized by the International Chess Federation (FIDE), this year’s festivities promise to be more inclusive and imaginative than ever before.
FIDE invites players, federations, clubs, schools, and chess enthusiasts worldwide to participate in a variety of events. Whether it’s staging a game in an unusual location, hosting a community gathering, or joining a live-streamed discussion on chess and social change, every contribution counts. “No event is too large or too small,” FIDE emphasizes, highlighting chess’s unique ability to inspire and create positive change.
Creative Chess: A Challenge to Innovate
This year, FIDE is launching the “Creative Chess” initiative, encouraging participants to set up games in extraordinary locations. Last year’s submissions included chess matches on rooftops beneath the Sagrada Família in Barcelona and submerged games in the world’s deepest pool in Dubai. “The board may have 64 squares, but the world of chess is boundless,” FIDE stated, inviting players to share their creative setups on social media using the hashtag #InternationalChessDay.
Promoting Inclusion with FIDE WOM
In a bid to foster equal participation, the FIDE Commission for Women’s Chess (WOM) is calling on federations and clubs to create welcoming events that highlight the contributions of women and girls in chess. Activities can range from tournaments to workshops, all aimed at introducing new players to the game. Organizers are encouraged to share their initiatives on social media with the hashtag #InternationalChessDayWOM, showcasing the remarkable work being done to promote inclusivity within the chess community.
Chess as a Force for Social Change
As part of the celebrations, FIDE will host an interactive panel discussion titled “Chess as Social Value: From the Chessboard to Society.” This 60-minute live discussion will feature policymakers, researchers, and practitioners who are leveraging chess to foster rehabilitation, inclusion, and development in various communities. The panel aims to explore how chess can build confidence and create opportunities for vulnerable populations, moving beyond the game itself to address broader social issues.
Scheduled for July 20, 2026, at 15:00 CEST, the discussion will be broadcasted live, allowing participants from around the world to engage in the conversation.
Join the Celebration
Whether you’re organizing an event, staging a game in an unexpected location, or simply playing with someone new, FIDE encourages everyone to be part of International Chess Day 2026. “Let us show the world not only where chess can be played, but also where chess can lead,” FIDE urges.
As the countdown to July 20 begins, the chess community is poised to demonstrate the game’s power to unite and inspire, proving that chess is more than just a game—it’s a global movement.
