A widely accepted theory suggests that chess evolved from the Indian war game known as ‘chaturanga.’ This early version of chess featured two crucial elements that would define the game: distinct pieces with unique functions and a focus on the king as the ultimate piece to protect. As chaturanga spread across continents, it transformed into various forms, notably ‘shatranj,’ which made its way into Europe through Persia, the Byzantine Empire, and the Arabian Empire.
The Islamic influence on chess is particularly noteworthy; the prohibition against creating statues of humans or animals led to the abstract design of chess pieces we recognize today. This lack of distinct features has contributed to the game’s universal appeal, allowing players from diverse backgrounds to connect over the board.
By the 10th century, the expanding Arabian Empire had introduced chess to North Africa, Sicily, and Spain. Simultaneously, Eastern Slavs brought the game to Kievan Rus’, while Vikings carried it to Iceland and England. Chess quickly became synonymous with wealth, knowledge, and power, solidifying its status as a game for the elite.
The modern version of chess began to take shape in England during the 15th century, adopting the iconic black and white squares that are now a hallmark of the game.
