Shreyas Royal rooting for D. Gukesh in upcoming World Chess Championship

Shreyas Royal, the young chess prodigy from Bengaluru, is rooting for D. Gukesh to win the upcoming World chess championship. Shreyas, who made headlines last December for almost beating the World champion in classical chess at the London Chess Classic, believes that Gukesh has what it takes to clinch the title.

The 14-year-old Shreyas gained recognition in the chess world six years ago when his family faced deportation from the UK due to his father’s work visa issues. Thanks to the intervention of now Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, and the personal decision of then home secretary Sajid Javid, the family was allowed to stay in the UK under a new work visa. Shreyas went on to become the youngest Grandmaster in the country, breaking a record previously held by David Howell.

Recently, Shreyas attended the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League in England, where he expressed his support for the tournament and the growth of chess in the UK. He emphasized the need for financial support for British chess, highlighting the importance of funding for the development of the game.

Looking ahead to the World championship match between Ding Liren and Gukesh, Shreyas believes that the young Chennai teenager has the potential to emerge victorious. He praises Gukesh’s confident and disciplined playing style, expressing his hope that Gukesh will win the championship.

As Shreyas eagerly anticipates the outcome of the World championship match, he reflects on his own impressive performance against the World champion and looks forward to the day when he can proudly tell his friends, “I almost beat the World champion in classical chess when I was 14.”
