Announcing the Freestyle Friday Championship: Your Path to the 2027 FIDE World Championships!

Chess.com and Freestyle Chess Unveil Exciting Freestyle Friday Championship

San Francisco, CA – In a thrilling announcement that has sent ripples through the chess community, Chess.com and Freestyle Chess have launched the inaugural Freestyle Friday Championship. This season-long competition promises to be a game-changer, offering players a direct path to the prestigious 2027 FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship and the inaugural 2027 FIDE Women’s Freestyle Chess World Championship.

The championship kicks off this week, building on the excitement generated by the recent 2026 FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship, where chess titan Magnus Carlsen clinched yet another title in Weissenhaus, Germany. Carlsen, alongside runner-up Fabiano Caruana and third-place finisher Nodirbek Abdusattorov, has already secured his spot for the upcoming world championships set for February 2027.

From February 20 to December 18, 2026, every Freestyle Friday event will contribute to an overall leaderboard. Players finishing in the top 10 of each weekly competition will earn points, with the ultimate goal of securing the coveted qualification spot by the end of the year. Notably, a separate leaderboard for women will also be established, ensuring representation in the women’s championship.

Freestyle Friday, known for its unique Chess960 format, features randomized starting positions that challenge players to think beyond conventional opening theory. Each weekly event consists of 11 rounds and boasts a prize fund of $1,000. However, the stakes have never been higher, as players now vie not just for weekly prizes but for a chance to compete on the world stage.

In a significant update, the time control for Freestyle Friday has been adjusted from 3+1 to 3+2, allowing players an extra second of increment per move. This change aims to enhance the competitive experience and provide players with more opportunities to strategize.

FIDE has also outlined the qualification paths for the upcoming world championship, which will feature a total of eight players. In addition to the three already qualified, another player will earn a spot through the Grenke Freestyle Chess Open scheduled for April 2-6, 2026. Chess.com will serve as the host for this exciting qualification series.

Should the winner of the Freestyle Friday Championship already qualify through other means, the qualification spot will cascade down to the next highest eligible player in the final standings, ensuring that the competition remains fierce and engaging.

As the chess world gears up for this thrilling new chapter, players and fans alike are eager to see who will rise to the challenge and secure their place in history. The road to the world championship officially runs through Chess.com, and the excitement is palpable.
