Junior and Senior Championships Underway in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS, MO — The excitement is palpable as the 2026 U.S. Junior and Senior Chess Championships kicked off on Tuesday, July 14, at the newly renovated Saint Louis Chess Club (SLCC). This year’s tournament boasts its largest and most inclusive field yet, promising thrilling matches and fierce competition.

With renowned (Grand)Master of Ceremonies Yasser Seirawan presiding over the opening ceremony, the atmosphere was electric. The SLCC has long been a hub for chess enthusiasts, hosting various prestigious tournaments, but this year marks a significant milestone as the Senior Women’s Championship joins the ranks of the U.S. Invitationals for the first time.

In a year that celebrates U.S. Senior Women’s chess, highlighted by a gold medal at the FIDE World Senior Team Championships, the inclusion of the Senior Women’s event adds an exciting dynamic to the competition. Spectators can now enjoy five additional games daily, with the Senior Women’s Championship already delivering five decisive results in its opening round.

A Day of Decisive Victories

Overall, 14 out of 20 games concluded with a winner, showcasing the high stakes and competitive spirit that define these championships. With a combined prize fund of $285,000, players from multiple generations are vying for top honors over nine rounds.

Senior Women’s Championship Highlights:
The Senior Women’s tournament kicked off with a bang. WFM Ivona Jezierska triumphed over WIM Beatriz Marinello in a thrilling King’s Indian Defense. Jezierska’s victory was a testament to her strategic prowess, as she navigated a topsy-turvy game that could have swung either way.

Defending champion WFM Natalya Tsodikova also started strong, capitalizing on a blunder from Diana Lanni. Joining them at the top of the standings are WGM Anjelina Belakovskaia, WFM Olga Sagalchik, and Jennifer Skidmore Smith, all of whom secured impressive wins.

Senior Championship Showdown

In the Senior Championship, three players—GMs Vladimir Akopian, Joel Benjamin, and IM Stuart Rachels—share the lead after the first round. Rachels delivered a notable victory against GM Alexander Goldin, while Benjamin capitalized on an overestimation by GM Gregory Kaidanov to secure his win. Akopian’s tactical prowess shone through in his match against GM Igor Novikov, setting the stage for an intense competition ahead.

Junior and Girls’ Junior Championships

The Junior Championship, while less decisive, still showcased impressive talent. IM Evan Park and IM Bach Ngo emerged as co-leaders, with Ngo making a splash in his St. Louis debut by defeating GM Nico Chasin. Park also secured a win against IM Alice Lee, marking a strong start for both players.

In the Girls’ Junior Championship, defending champion WGM Zoey Tang faced challenges, while WIM Rachael Li made a statement with an upset victory over pre-tournament favorite IM-Elect Rose Atwell. FM Jasmine Su and WFM Aimee Yang also joined the leaders with their respective wins, setting the stage for an exciting second round.

Looking Ahead

As the tournament progresses, fans can anticipate more thrilling matches and strategic battles. Today’s matchups promise to be pivotal, with players eager to solidify their standings early in the competition.
