Jamie Ding’s Historic Jeopardy! Streak Ends at the Hands of Philadelphia Challenger Greg Shahade
Historic Streak Ends: Jamie Ding’s Jeopardy! Run Concludes at the Hands of Philly Challenger
In a thrilling episode of Jeopardy! on Monday night, Jamie Ding’s remarkable 31-game winning streak came to an unexpected end, courtesy of Greg Shahade, a chess master from Philadelphia. Ding, who had been dominating the quiz show, was just one win shy of tying the legendary James Holzhauer’s record of 32 consecutive victories.
Throughout his impressive run, Ding, a native of Grosse Pointe, Michigan, had faced off against numerous competitors from the City of Brotherly Love, including software engineer Max Ernst and event planner Jessica Frankenfield. However, it was Shahade who ultimately claimed victory, showcasing his trivia prowess and strategic gameplay.
Heading into the Final Jeopardy round, Shahade had already established a commanding lead after successfully answering all three Daily Doubles. The final clue, under the category “World Languages,” asked contestants to identify the first and last official languages of South Africa. Both Shahade and Ding answered correctly with “What are Afrikaans and Zulu?” But Ding’s second-place score of $19,010 couldn’t surpass Shahade’s impressive total of $33,000. Ohio teacher Katrina Puckett rounded out the competition with $4,990.
Ding’s journey on Jeopardy! has been nothing short of historic. He finishes with the fifth-most consecutive wins in the show’s history since the five-game cap was lifted in 2003. His total earnings amount to $885,605, making him one of the top earners in Jeopardy! history, outside of special tournaments.
A Princeton University graduate, Ding now resides in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, where he works for the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency. Reflecting on his time in the spotlight, he expressed, “I really love history, and it’s cool to be making some history myself.”
Despite his loss, Ding’s Jeopardy! journey isn’t over. He is set to return next year for the Tournament of Champions, where he will compete against other top contestants, including Harrison Whitaker, who won 14 games last November.
Meet Greg Shahade: The Chess Master Turned Trivia Titan
Greg Shahade, 47, is not just any trivia player; he is an international master in chess, a title that places him just below grandmaster. A resident of Rittenhouse Square and a Masterman High School alum, Shahade has made a name for himself in the chess community. However, his foray into trivia is relatively new.
Since joining the trivia league LearnedLeague in 2021, Shahade has dedicated himself to honing his skills, even using past Jeopardy! questions as study material. “I just keep doing what I’m doing for as long as I find it interesting,” he stated, reflecting his commitment to continuous improvement.
Chess runs in the Shahade family; his sister, Jennifer, is a two-time U.S. women’s chess champion and a published author. She has also made appearances on Jeopardy!, albeit not as a contestant.
As Jeopardy! continues its 42nd season, hosted by former champion Ken Jennings, the show remains a staple in Philadelphia, ranking as the second-most watched program in the city. With Ding’s historic run concluded and Shahade emerging victorious, fans are left eagerly anticipating what the future holds for both contestants.
