Warning: Magnetic Chess Game Sold by JOMO Poses Serious Ingestion Hazard for Children – CPSC Alert

The Consumer Product and Safety Commission (CPSC) is issuing a warning about a magnetic chess game that poses serious ingestion risks for children. The game, sold by China-based seller JOMO under the names “Magnetic”, “Magnetism”, or “Magnetism Intelligence Strategy Game”, contains magnets that do not comply with U.S. federal safety regulations.

The CPSC has stated that the loose magnets in the game can pose a risk of serious injury or death if ingested. Despite issuing a violation notice to JOMO, the company has not agreed to recall the product or provide a remedy. As a result, the CPSC is urging people to immediately stop using the game and dispose of it.

The games were sold online at walmart.com in a blue box labeled “Magnetic” and contain about 20 loose black magnets. It is important to note that the game does not include chess-shaped pieces as advertised.

Swallowing magnets can have severe health consequences, especially for children. The CPSC warns that if high-powered magnets are ingested, they can attract each other or other metal objects in the body, leading to blockage, infection, blood poisoning, or even death.

The CPSC estimates that there have been 2,400 magnet ingestions treated in hospitals annually between 2017 and 2021, with eight related deaths reported from 2005 through 2021. It is crucial for consumers to heed the warning and safely dispose of the Magnetic Chess Games to prevent any potential harm.
