Did Gukesh D Win the World Chess Championship by Chance?
Gukesh D Wins World Championship: Luck or Skill? Controversy Erupts
On December 12, 2024, Gukesh Dommaraju etched his name in history by becoming the youngest world chess champion, defeating Chinese grandmaster Ding Liren. However, the triumph has been overshadowed by allegations of luck rather than skill, as former world champion Anatoly Karpov publicly questioned the legitimacy of Gukesh’s victory.
Karpov’s Controversial Claims
In a recent interview, the 74-year-old Russian chess legend stirred the pot by suggesting that Gukesh’s win was more a matter of chance than a testament to his talent. Karpov stated, “First of all, the Indian chess player became [champion] by chance, because he wasn’t supposed to win the match against the Chinese player. The Chinese player lost a game there that he shouldn’t have lost. Had he not, the Chinese player would have remained the world champion.”
Karpov further asserted that Magnus Carlsen, the former champion who has stepped back from competitive play, still holds a shadow over the title. “Officially, it’s Gukesh, but because Carlsen stopped playing. And so Carlsen, if he wanted to, could take the crown back,” he added.
Support and Criticism from the Chess Community
Karpov’s remarks have sparked a wave of criticism from other chess grandmasters, including Vladimir Kramnik, who echoed similar sentiments. Yet, amidst the controversy, Ding Liren himself took a calm approach to his defeat. “I quite enjoy my current situation,” he remarked, emphasizing his newfound leisure away from the competitive circuit. “I keep up playing the occasional game online… The process itself is rewarding.”
A Nod to Indian Chess Development
Despite the criticisms, Karpov did not shy away from acknowledging the strength of the Indian chess program. He praised the country’s efforts in nurturing talent, stating, “It’s the result of a serious state program for chess in India. I don’t know who advised their leaders, but Indian chess players are already dominating international tournaments.”
The Road Ahead for Gukesh
As Gukesh navigates this storm of criticism, the chess world watches closely. Will he be able to prove his detractors wrong and solidify his place as a true champion? Or will the shadow of luck continue to loom over his historic victory?
