Kaustav Barat emerged victorious in the first open rapid chess tournament organized by the Gurukul Chess Academy and Taluka Chess Association in Nagpur. The tournament, held at the WCL Shramik Hall in Saoner, saw Barat, the top seed, showcase his exceptional skills as he remained unbeaten throughout the day-long event.
In the intense eight-round competition, Barat secured 7.5 points to claim the top spot on the leaderboard. The 36-year-old chess maestro won seven games and played a hard-fought draw against third seed Roneet Das in the penultimate round, ultimately clinching the title with a half-point lead. In the final round, Barat defeated Sahejveer Singh Maras to solidify his position as the champion.
Meanwhile, Roneet Das finished in second place after settling for a draw with Suhan Deshpande in the final round. The tournament witnessed some thrilling matches, with players showcasing their strategic prowess and determination on the chessboard.
The final standings of the tournament saw Kaustav Barat at the top with 7.5 points and a total of 41.5 points, followed closely by Roneet Das with 7 points and 41.5 points. Kishan Ahuja and Suhan Deshpande also put up impressive performances, finishing with 7 points each.
