GM Vincent Keymer Triumphs at Freestyle Friday Championship

May 8, 2026 — In a thrilling display of strategic prowess, Grandmaster Vincent Keymer clinched victory at the Freestyle Friday Championship, scoring an impressive 9.5 out of 11 points. Despite facing tough competition from International Master Marco Materia and fellow Grandmaster Pranav Venkatesh, who both finished with 8.5 points, Keymer’s performance solidified his status as a dominant force in the tournament.

The event, which experienced technical difficulties leading to a delayed start, showcased an official broadcast featuring renowned commentator GM Peter Leko alongside James Dash. The games commenced approximately 80 minutes later than scheduled, but the excitement was palpable as players took to the virtual board.

Keymer, who became the first player to win three Freestyle Fridays in 2026, demonstrated his skill early on by defeating GM Oleksandr Bortnyk after a brief scare. He entered the first break alongside GM Nodirbek Yakubboev and IM Khuong Duy Dau, all boasting perfect scores of 4/4.

However, the competition intensified as Yakubboev became the only player to reach 5/5, defeating Khuong, while Pranav managed to topple Keymer in a pivotal match. Leko highlighted a critical moment in the game, pinpointing 32.e5 as a turning point that hindered Keymer’s position.

As the rounds progressed, the leaderboard shifted dramatically. Pranav took the lead after defeating Yakubboev, while Khuong continued to apply pressure, ultimately taking the top spot after a tense match against Bortnyk. Keymer, however, was not to be underestimated; he regained the lead after a series of strategic victories, including a crucial win against IM Viktor Skliarov, who blundered a rook.

In the final round, Keymer faced WGM Afruza Khamdamova. Despite an early struggle, he managed to secure victory in under 30 moves, sealing his triumph in the tournament.

Pranav’s strong performance earned him third place, further solidifying his lead in the Freestyle Friday Championship standings. Khuong maintained fourth place, edging out WIM Melika Mohammadi, who made history with her fifth-place finish, the highest ever for a woman in Freestyle Friday.

With a prize pool that awarded Keymer $400, Materia $250, and Pranav $150, the stakes were high, but the camaraderie among players remained evident. The next Freestyle Friday broadcast is scheduled for June 12, promising more exhilarating chess action.

As the chess community eagerly anticipates the next installment, Keymer’s victory serves as a reminder of the unpredictable and thrilling nature of Freestyle Chess.
