Day Seven Recap: Younger Players Triumph in Divisions II and III of the 2024 Champions Chess Tour Chessable Masters

Day seven of the 2024 Champions Chess Tour Chessable Masters concluded with exciting matches in Divisions II and III. The younger players emerged victorious in both divisions, showcasing their skills and determination on the chessboard.

In Division II, GM Vincent Keymer defeated the renowned GM Levon Aronian in a thrilling match. Despite Aronian’s impressive reputation, Keymer had a 3-2 plus score in their rapid chess encounters, setting the stage for an intense battle. After a strong start by Aronian, Keymer fought back with a crushing victory in game three, ultimately winning the match in the second set.

On the other hand, in Division III, GM Alexey Sarana overcame GM Alexander Grischuk in a closely contested match. Sarana, with a remarkable 7-2 plus score against Grischuk, displayed his strategic prowess and determination throughout the match. Despite Grischuk’s initial lead, Sarana dominated the reset and secured victory in both games.

With these impressive wins, Keymer earned $15,000, 50 tour points, and a ticket to Division I of the next event, while Sarana received $7,500, 30 tour points, and a spot in at least Division II of the upcoming event. The Grand Final of Division I will feature GM Alireza Firouzja facing off against GM Magnus Carlsen on Wednesday, February 7.

The 2024 Chessable Masters is the first of four events on the 2024 Champions Chess Tour, offering a $300,000 prize fund and determining one of the players who will advance to the in-person CCT Finals. Stay tuned for more exciting chess action and updates from the world of competitive chess.
