Khelo India Chess Tournament: A Thriving Showcase of Talent and Community Spirit in Johannesburg
Khelo India Chess Tournament Unites Over 200 Players in Johannesburg
Johannesburg, April 19, 2023 – The third edition of the Khelo India Chess Tournament took place over the weekend at Nova Pioneer School, drawing more than 200 chess enthusiasts from various backgrounds. Hosted by the Consulate General of India in Johannesburg in collaboration with the Lonehill Chess Academy, this event is part of the Indian government’s Khelo India initiative, which aims to promote sports and cultural exchange among the diaspora.
Jay Venkat, founder and director of the Lonehill Chess Academy, expressed his excitement about the tournament’s growth since its inception. “We’ve been coaching chess for over four years, and together with Khelo India, we’ve been running this tournament for the past two years. This is now the third edition of the Khelo India Open LCHS tournament,” he said.
The two-day event featured two distinct formats: Swiss (classical chess) and Blitz, catering to players of varying skill levels. The Blitz format, which allowed only five minutes per player, attracted over 40 participants, while the Swiss format, known for its structured competition, saw around 160 players engage in games lasting up to two hours.
“The Swiss format is what we call classical chess, and it remains the most popular across the world. Hosting events like this allows players of all levels to experience structured competition and improve their game,” Venky noted.
Participants competed across multiple sections, including Prestige A, B, C, and D, with a total prize fund of R25,000 awarded to the top three players in each category. This not only provided competitive exposure but also fostered the growth of the local chess community.
As the tournament unfolded, the atmosphere was electric, with players deep in concentration, each move bringing them closer to victory. “In total, we had more than 200 participants competing across the two days,” Venky added, highlighting the event’s success in bringing together chess lovers from all walks of life.
The Khelo India Chess Tournament not only showcased talent but also reinforced the importance of cultural exchange through sports, making it a significant event in the South African chess calendar.
