World Chess Organisation Introduces Polygraph Testing to Combat Cheating in Chess

Former world champion Vladimir Kramnik has made history by becoming the first player to undergo a polygraph test, a groundbreaking measure introduced by the World Chess Organisation to combat cheating in both online matches and over-the-board tournaments.

The World Chess Organisation, which operates chessarena.com for FIDE, the official chess body, announced the introduction of voluntary polygraph testing as a significant new tool in its anti-cheating efforts. The decision comes in response to a rise in cheating allegations within the chess community, including high-profile cases involving millions of dollars in lawsuits.

Vladimir Kramnik, known for his advocacy for fair play, recently participated in and won the “Clash of Blames” against Jose Martinez Alcantara, a match that highlighted the importance of addressing cheating in chess. In a move to further solidify his stance and address persistent rumors dating back to the 2006 World Championship match against Veselin Topalov, Kramnik voluntarily took a polygraph test facilitated by Pinkerton, the famous detective agency, and administered by a former Scotland Yard Detective Superintendent.

The World Chess Organisation has extended the opportunity for all top 100 players to undergo the same polygraph test for free, with the goal of establishing polygraph testing as a standard procedure within the chess community. Ilya Merenzon, CEO of World Chess, emphasized the importance of this initiative in protecting the integrity of the sport and reinforcing trust and transparency at the highest levels of competition.

The introduction of polygraph testing in chess aims to provide clear and definitive information in resolving conflicts and allegations of cheating, ultimately putting the focus back on the game itself. This initiative marks a significant step towards ensuring fair play and maintaining the integrity of chess as a beloved and respected sport.
