In a thrilling display of skill and determination, GM Denis Lazavik emerged victorious on day two of the 2024 Speed Chess Championship Play-in, securing his spot in the main event with three impressive wins. Lazavik faced tough competition from GMs Yuriy Kuzubov, M Pranesh, and Dmitry Andreikin, but he didn’t lose a single game throughout the day.
Lazavik’s stellar performance earned him the 16th and final spot in the main event, which is set to kick off on July 25. The young chess prodigy played a total of 14 games on Friday, showcasing his strategic prowess and tactical brilliance against some of the best players in the world.
The tournament featured a double-elimination Knockout format, with eight players advancing from the Swiss qualifier to compete in one-on-one matches. Despite needing to defeat Lazavik twice to secure the win, Andreikin couldn’t overcome his opponent’s strategic brilliance and had to settle for second place.
Lazavik’s impressive performance has solidified his place among the world’s best speed chess players, as he prepares to face off against the likes of Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura, and Ding Liren in the main event. With a FIDE blitz rating of 2553, Lazavik will be a formidable contender in the upcoming championship.
