Excitement and Energy at the 2026 National Elementary School Championships in Baltimore!
Young Minds Shine at 2026 National Elementary School Championships in Baltimore
Baltimore, MD — While seasoned chess professionals often dread the prospect of playing multiple classical games in a single day, over 2,500 enthusiastic young players at the 2026 National Elementary School Championships embraced the challenge with open arms, eagerly participating in three rounds of intense competition on Saturday.
The atmosphere at the Baltimore Convention Center was electric, with the skittles room buzzing as children gathered around chess boards, engaging in blitz games against special guests. The infectious energy of these young competitors was palpable; if they could, they would play chess even in their dreams!
A Day Packed with Chess and Fun
Saturday was not just about the games; it was a day filled with excitement and learning. Participants enjoyed a lecture from Women Grandmaster Katerina Nemcova, thrilling blitz sessions with Grandmaster Elshan Moradiabadi, and an engaging blitz match featuring International Master Danny Rensch, the face of Chess.com.
Spectators were treated to a captivating showdown between Rensch and Moradiabadi, while those who stayed for Nemcova’s session witnessed her fierce battle against 2025 National High School Champion GM Nico Chasin in a dramatic King’s Indian Defense.
“I was so excited to play against them,” said one participant, reflecting the enthusiasm that filled the venue. Even after the formal events concluded, many players stayed late to challenge the reporter to blitz matches, showcasing their skills until the evening.
Celebrating the Girls Club
In the Girls Club Room, a vibrant space dedicated to female players, WFM Laura Smith and Rochelle Ballantyne captivated a full audience with a lecture on board vision. The room buzzed with creativity as girls participated in various activities, including nail painting, Mother’s Day card-making, and an architectural challenge to build the tallest tower of chess pieces.
“The Girls Club Room is my favorite place here,” shared one young participant, highlighting the supportive environment that fosters camaraderie and skill development.
Looking Ahead: Sunday’s Events
As the championship continues, excitement builds for Sunday’s events. IM Danny Rensch will be signing copies of his memoir, Dark Squares: How Chess Saved My Life, while WGM Jennifer Shahade will present her new book, Thinking Sideways: How to Think Like a Chess Player and Win at Life. Both books promise to inspire young minds with lessons drawn from the game of chess.
Participants eager for more blitz action can line up to challenge Moradiabadi and Nemcova during their respective sessions, while lectures will provide further insights into the game.
