Highlights from the April 10, 2026 Freestyle Friday Tournament: A Thrilling Conclusion and Tiebreak Triumphs
Dramatic Ups and Downs at April 10 Freestyle Friday Chess Tournament
April 10, 2026 – The Freestyle Friday tournament held on Chess.com turned into a thrilling spectacle, showcasing the highs and lows of competitive chess. Grandmaster Jan-Krzysztof Duda, who had dominated the event with a perfect score through the ninth round, faced an unexpected twist in the final rounds, ultimately leading to a three-way tie for first place.
Duda, who had been riding high with a flawless performance, found himself in a precarious position after suffering defeats to fellow Grandmasters Pranav Venkatesh and Parham Maghsoodloo in the last two rounds. This dramatic turn of events left all three players tied with nine points each at the end of the 11th round. However, it was Maghsoodloo who emerged victorious on tiebreaks, claiming the first prize of $400, while Venkatesh and Duda took home $250 and $150, respectively.
The tournament, which attracted a total of 105 players, also saw notable performances from other competitors. GM Sanan Sjugirov secured the fourth prize with eight points, while GM Alexandra Kosteniuk clinched the top women’s prize of $100 with a commendable score of 6.5 points. Kosteniuk’s performance brings her closer to the leaderboard leader, GM Anna Muzychuk.
Adding to the intrigue, top GM Fabiano Caruana participated on his rest day from the ongoing FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026. However, his experience was marred by a loss to Duda in the fifth round, followed by a walkover against Maghsoodloo in the sixth round, leading to his withdrawal from the event.
The final round was particularly heartbreaking for Duda, who had maintained a point lead throughout the tournament. Despite starting strong and appearing to have a significant advantage, he overlooked a critical threat from his opponent, resulting in a stunning defeat.
Earlier in the tournament, Duda had capitalized on a blunder from Caruana, showcasing his tactical prowess. Meanwhile, Maghsoodloo, despite earlier losses to GMs Dmitry Andreikin and Benjamin Bok, rallied back to win his final four games, demonstrating resilience and skill. Venkatesh also finished strong, winning his last five matches, including an impressive victory against GM Pavel Eljanov in the ninth round.
