Arjun Erigaisi falls to Hikaru Nakamura in Freestyle Chess Grand Slam tournament

Arjun Erigaisi’s valiant effort in the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam tournament came to an end as he faced off against the seasoned Hikaru Nakamura in Paris. Despite putting up a strong fight, Erigaisi ultimately succumbed to Nakamura’s strategic play, leading to his resignation after 62 moves due to a material disadvantage.

Meanwhile, World No.1 Magnus Carlsen showcased his adaptability in the tournament, securing a spot in the semifinals with a draw against Nodirbek Abdusattorov. Carlsen’s well-executed exchange sacrifice proved to be a key factor in his success in the Freestyle format, where pieces are randomly arranged at the start.

In other quarterfinal matches, Fabiano Caruana advanced to the last-four by overcoming Maxime Vachier-Lagrave’s defenses. Ian Nepomniachtchi and Vincent Keymer drew, leading to a tie-break to determine the winner.

Additionally, in the battle for 9th to 12th places, D Gukesh and Vidit Gujrathi drew against Richard Rapport and R Praggnanandhaa, respectively. Praggnanandhaa will now face Rapport for the ninth spot, while Gukesh and Gujrathi will compete for the remaining positions.
