Magnus Carlsen, the reigning World No. 1 in chess, showcased his brilliance at the Tata Steel Chess India Rapid Tournament in Kolkata, taking the sole lead with a flawless performance on Thursday. Carlsen secured victories against S L Narayanan, Wesley So, and Arjun Erigaisi, propelling him to the top of the leaderboard with five points out of a possible six in the ‘Open’ section.

Starting the day just half a point behind overnight leader Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Carlsen’s masterful play elevated him to the top spot, with Abdusattorov closely trailing with 4.5 points. The Uzbek prodigy held his own with draws against Nihal Sarin and Vidit Gujrathi, positioning himself as Carlsen’s primary challenger heading into the final day.

In the women’s section, Aleksandra Goryachkina from Russia secured the sole lead with five points after three impressive victories on day two. Georgian Grandmaster Nana Dzagnidze is closely trailing Goryachkina with four points, showcasing her skills with wins over Vaishali and Koneru Humpy.

India’s D. Harika, Vantika Agrawal, and Valentina Gunina share the third spot in the women’s section with 3.5 points each. The competition remains fierce as the players gear up for the final day of the tournament.
