World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen Quits World Rapid Chess Championship Over Dress Code Dispute

World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen made headlines when he quit the World Rapid Chess Championship after refusing to change out of his jeans, a violation of the tournament’s dress code. The International Chess Federation (FIDE) issued a fine of $200 to Carlsen for breaching the rules.

Carlsen, who has a long list of championship titles to his name, also withdrew from the World Blitz Championship following the incident. Despite the possibility of returning for the rest of the tournament, Carlsen decided to walk away, citing the incident as a matter of principle.

In a statement, FIDE clarified that the decision to penalize Carlsen was made impartially and applied equally to all players. The incident highlighted growing tensions between Carlsen and FIDE, with the chess player accusing the organization of targeting players not to sign with a rival tournament.

FIDE’s CEO responded to Carlsen’s claims, calling them a “lie” and emphasizing the organization’s role as the governing body of chess. The incident has sparked discussions within the chess community about dress codes and player conduct in tournaments.
