In a heartfelt note, Michael D. Buss, the US Chess Correspondence Coordinator, expressed gratitude to Jeff French for his exceptional service as Games Editor over the past year and a half. As Jeff steps into retirement alongside his wife, they look forward to exploring new adventures together, while he continues to lead as President of the Correspondence Chess League of America.

“It has been my pleasure,” Jeff remarked, as he introduced the latest issue of Check is in the Mail, which showcases a rich collection of games contributed by readers. This edition features nearly thirty games, spanning various formats from ICCF server events to postal tournaments and thrilling two-player Lightning Matches.

A Showcase of Skill

Among the highlighted games, readers can find:

  • Game 1: Brent Walker vs. Robert Irons, featuring the Sicilian Four Knights, where Irons secured victory after the 27th move.

  • Game 2: Patrick Walsh vs. Brian Gradin, showcasing an Unusual line after 1. Nf3, with Walsh forcing a resignation after the 21st move.

  • Game 3: John Bailey vs. Christopher Snell, where Bailey triumphed in a Modern Defence after 50 moves.

  • Game 4: Greg Whitlock vs. Lance Schuttenhelm, demonstrating the English Opening, with Whitlock winning after the 35th move.

  • Game 5: Jon S. Leisner vs. Mike C. Moschos, featuring the French Tarrasch, where Leisner emerged victorious after the 37th move.

  • Game 6: Jon Leisner vs. David Jones, also in the French Tarrasch, which ended in a draw after the 44th move.

Puzzles to Challenge the Mind

This issue also includes three engaging puzzles derived from the featured games, inviting readers to test their skills. The puzzles can be solved interactively online, enhancing the experience for chess enthusiasts.

In addition to the farewell, Buss announced the upcoming Electronic Knights National Finals, set to commence on July 3, 2026, featuring 105 players who have advanced through preliminary sections. The 2024 National Finals will follow shortly after, beginning on July 6, 2026.

The chess community also mourns the loss of Jack Mongilutz, a cherished competitor and friend, who passed away on June 9, 2026. His contributions to the game will be fondly remembered.
