Mark Heimann Earns Final GM Norm at Saint Louis Masters, Caruana and Donchenko Tie for First
In a stunning turn of events, IM Mark Heimann has achieved his final GM norm less than a week after earning his second GM norm at the U.S. Masters in Charlotte. The Saint Louis Masters, held from December 3 through 7, featured a strong field of 59 players competing for FIDE Circuit points and a share of a $100,000 prize fund.
GMs Fabiano Caruana and Alexander Donchenko tied for first place with 6½/9 scores, a half-point ahead of several grandmasters who tied for third. Heimann’s performance at the tournament was exceptional, earning him a 2687 performance rating and securing his final GM norm with a round to spare.
Despite facing nine consecutive grandmasters, Heimann managed to achieve his norm with impressive wins against strong opponents. His journey to becoming a Grandmaster is even more remarkable considering he only earned his IM title last year and has a full-time job as a computer scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
Another standout player at the tournament was Turkish IM Isik Can, who went undefeated in eight games against grandmasters, finishing with a 6/9 score and a share of third place. His performance earned him a 2766 performance rating.
Caruana’s victory at the Saint Louis Masters also earned him valuable points on the 2024 FIDE Circuit leaderboard, putting him in a strong position to secure a spot in the next FIDE Candidates Tournament. The FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Championships later this month will be crucial for players like Caruana and Arjun Erigaisi to add to their overall score.
Overall, the Saint Louis Masters showcased some incredible talent and fierce competition, with Heimann and Can standing out as rising stars in the world of chess.
