GM Jose Martinez Triumphs at Titled Tuesday: A Recap of the June 30 Tournament

GM Jose Martinez Dominates Titled Tuesday with Undefeated Streak

June 30, 2026 — In a stunning display of skill and strategy, Grandmaster Jose Martinez clinched victory at Chess.com’s Titled Tuesday tournament, finishing with an impressive score of 10 out of 11 and remaining undefeated throughout the event. This marks Martinez’s second triumph in the past six weeks, solidifying his status as a formidable competitor in the chess world.

Martinez’s performance was nothing short of spectacular, as he outpaced his rivals, with no player coming within half a point of his score. Five players, including renowned GM Fabiano Caruana, finished with nine points, but it was Caruana who secured second place thanks to superior tiebreaks, edging out third-place GM Levon Aronian and others.

A Recap of the Tournament

The tournament kicked off with 16 players, including Martinez and Caruana, all starting strong with 4/4. However, it was Martinez who continued his winning streak, going 5/5. His tactical prowess was on full display in round three against GM Alexander Rustemov, where a brilliant move, 35.f5!!, not only secured his g6-knight but also baited Rustemov into a miscalculation.

As the tournament progressed, Martinez, Aronian, and GM Aleksandr Shimanov maintained their perfect records at 6/6, but all three faced draws in the seventh round, leaving the perfect score bounty to grow for the next week.

In a pivotal eighth-round match, Martinez showcased his resilience against GM Zhamsaran Tsydypov, finding a brilliant 20…Bxf5! that set him on the path to victory, moving him to 7.5/8. Meanwhile, Caruana and Aronian also kept pace, each reaching 7/8.

Martinez faced challenges in the later rounds, particularly against Duda in round nine, where he fought back from a pawn deficit to equalize and ultimately win on time. In round ten, he again found himself in a precarious position against Aronian but managed to turn the tables, winning despite being down on the board.

The final round saw draws across the top boards, with Martinez securing a tie for first place, but this time, he held on to his lead without any last-minute mishaps, unlike his previous tournament win.

Standings and Prizes

Martinez’s victory not only earned him the top prize of $2,500 but also added to the growing perfect score bounty, which now stands at $1,250. The tournament’s prize pool also recognized other top performers, with Caruana and Aronian taking home $1,500 and $1,000, respectively.

Looking Ahead

As Titled Tuesday continues to attract elite chess talent, the stakes are set to rise even higher next week. With the perfect score bounty growing and players eager to claim victory, fans can expect another thrilling round of chess action.
