Exciting Results from Chennai Grand Masters 2024: GMs Mendonca and Venkatesh Lead Challengers, Three-Way Tie in Masters Section

GMs Leon Mendonca and Pranav Venkatesh have taken the lead in the Challengers section of the Chennai Grand Masters 2024 tournament with their second straight wins. In the Masters section, GMs Arjun Erigaisi, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, and Amin Tabatabaei are in a three-way tie with 1.5 points each after the second round.

Tabatabaei’s impressive win over GM Alexey Sarana propelled him to join the leaders in the Masters section. Meanwhile, GM Parham Magsoodhloo secured a victory over GM Vidit Gujrathi in the only other decisive game of the day. Arjun’s draw against GM Levon Aronian provided an entertaining spectacle, with both players missing tactical chances in the middlegame.

In the Challengers section, Mendonca showcased his active positional style in a win against GM Harika Dronavalli, while Pranav capitalized on a blunder by GM Abhimanyu Puranik.

The tournament continues with round three scheduled for November 7. The Chennai Grand Masters 2024 is India’s strongest classical super-tournament of the year, featuring top players competing in an eight-player round-robin format with a prize fund of 50 lakhs.
