Midrand Chess Club Set to Host Thrilling Blitz Tournament for All Ages!

Midrand Chess Club Prepares for Thrilling Blitz Tournament

Midrand, Gauteng – The Midrand Chess Club is set to ignite the local chess scene with its highly anticipated Midrand Blitz Open, scheduled for March 7 at Halfway House Primary School. Following the success of its junior-only tournament in March, the club is expanding its reach to include players of all ages in what promises to be a fast-paced and fiercely competitive event.

The tournament will feature a rated seven-round format with a 5+0 blitz time control, where each player has just five minutes to complete their game. This high-speed format is designed to test players’ rapid critical thinking, emotional control, and decision-making under pressure, according to event organizer and club coach Kgosimang Molefe.

“In a blitz environment, players sharpen skills that translate directly into academic performance and leadership capacity,” Molefe explained. “It’s not just about winning; it’s about building a structured chess pathway in our community.”

The tournament will be divided into three sections:

  • Section A is open to all ages, with cash prizes of R1,000 for first place, R500 for second, and R300 for third.
  • Section B is for high school learners, while Section C caters to primary school learners, offering medals and trophies.

Molefe emphasized the club’s broader objective of increasing rated participation and strengthening competitive exposure for juniors. “We aim to build a stronger local chess culture and attract sustainable sponsorship,” he said.

The event is sponsored by Score Energy, the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, and Save a Boy Child. However, Molefe noted that additional sponsors are crucial for expanding the club’s reach and resources. “Local sponsorship would directly solve many of the challenges we face, including limited funding and equipment shortages,” he added.

As chess continues to gain popularity in Midrand, the club is actively seeking local sponsors and corporate partners to enhance its impact and improve prize funds. Registration for the tournament is R250, with entries closing on March 4. Interested players and potential sponsors can contact Kgosimang Molefe at 073 494 3478.
