Montana Fishing Report: Adventure Awaits Amidst Grizzly Drama and Prime Fly Action!

Montana Fishing Report: Adventure Awaits Amidst Grizzly Drama

If you’ve been dreaming of swapping your office chair for a pair of waders, this week’s Montana fishing report offers a thrilling mix of angling opportunities and wildlife encounters. From the serene lakes to the bustling rivers, anglers are in for a treat—provided they stay alert for some local grizzly bears asserting their territory.

Lakes Fishing: A Tactical Game

Hebgen and Quake Lakes are proving to be productive fishing spots on calmer days. Anglers are successfully using a variety of flies, including #16 Griffith’s Gnat and #8 Black Simi-Seal Leech, to entice fish. The chironomid hatch is in full swing, but these tiny insects can be a challenge to fish effectively. While the prime callibaetis fishing is still on the horizon, there are plenty of opportunities for those willing to play a game of tactical chess with the fish.

Current Flows:

  • Hebgen Lake Inflow: 871 CFS
  • Hebgen Lake Outflow: 449 CFS
  • Water Temp @ Kirby: High 52°F, Low 40°F

Upper Madison: Steady Action Ahead

The Upper Madison River is holding steady, with fish beginning to look up as the water levels rise. Recent cold spells may delay bug activity, but small attractors like chubbies and wulffs are expected to entice rising fish. Nymphing remains a solid strategy, with mayfly nymphs and stoneflies on the menu. As gloomy weather approaches, streamers are a reliable choice.

Flies to Try:

  • 16 BWO Loopwing

  • 12 Black Rubberleg Stone

  • 6 Mini Sex Dungeon

Wildlife Drama: Bear Encounters

Caution is advised for those venturing into the area. A grizzly bear has been spotted dragging an animal carcass near the river, leading to the indefinite closure of a section between Hebgen and Quake Lakes. Additionally, a recent hiker encounter has temporarily locked down another area near the Firehole. Anglers are reminded to keep their bear spray handy and stay informed about local closures.

Yellowstone National Park: A Mixed Bag

The rivers within Yellowstone National Park are open for fishing, with the Firehole, Gibbon, and Madison all showing promising activity. Caddis and baetis hatches are prevalent, particularly on the Firehole. However, a bear encounter has led to a section of the Firehole being closed indefinitely.

YNP Flows:

  • Firehole: 283 CFS
  • Gibbon: 116 CFS
  • Madison: 422 CFS
