Honoring the Legacy of GM Daniel Naroditsky: The Inaugural Naroditsky Memorial Blitz and Rapid Tournament
Chess Community Unites to Honor GM Daniel Naroditsky with Memorial Tournament
Charlotte, NC – As the chess world continues to mourn the untimely passing of Grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky, a vibrant tribute is set to unfold this July. The Charlotte Chess Center (CCC) is gearing up for the inaugural Naroditsky Memorial Blitz and Rapid (NMBR), a tournament designed not only to celebrate Naroditsky’s legacy but also to embody his passion for the game.
It has been nearly six months since the chess community was rocked by the news of Naroditsky’s death at just 29 years old. Known affectionately as “Danya,” he was celebrated for his extraordinary ability to inspire players of all levels and for his commitment to fostering a sense of community both locally in Charlotte and globally. As FM Mike Klein poignantly noted in his obituary for Chess Life, Naroditsky taught us that “you can build community locally and globally.”
After graduating from Stanford University in 2019, Naroditsky made Charlotte his home, becoming the CCC’s first grandmaster-in-residence. His influence helped elevate the club’s status, making it a hub for chess enthusiasts. To honor his memory, the CCC, in collaboration with Naroditsky’s family, established the Charlotte Chess Center Foundation (CCCF). This foundation aims to create pathways for growth and excellence in chess, ensuring that Naroditsky’s spirit lives on.
The CCCF has launched a fundraising campaign for the Naroditsky Memorial Fund, which promises to establish two key initiatives: an annual over-the-board blitz and rapid tournament, and a scholarship program for promising young chess players. The excitement surrounding the NMBR is palpable, with Chess.com announcing the event on March 4, and registration opening shortly thereafter.
The tournament, scheduled for July 3-5, will feature a Masters Section filled with elite players, including GM Hikaru Nakamura, GM Hans Niemann, and GM Wesley So, alongside rising stars like GM Javokhir Sindarov and GM Nihal Sarin. Already, 73 players have registered for this competitive section, which has a rating minimum of 2200 US Chess or FIDE. Additionally, a Challengers section is open to players of all levels, with 86 participants already signed up.
Naroditsky was known for his love of faster time controls, often showcasing his skills in blitz and bullet games. The NMBR aims to bring his vision to life, featuring a Creator Invitational that will see ten renowned chess content creators, including IM Levy Rozman (GothamChess) and WFM Alex Botez, compete in an all-play-all tournament.
The weekend will culminate in a Blitz Final, where the top ten players from the Masters Section will face off, a poignant tribute to Naroditsky’s own experiences in competitive play. In the 2024 FIDE World Blitz Championship, he was one of ten players to tie for first in the qualifier Swiss tournament but missed out on the knockout stage due to tiebreaks. This year, ensuring ten finalists serves as a heartfelt nod to his legacy.
Events of this magnitude typically require extensive planning, but the chess community has rallied together to support the CCCF’s mission, ensuring a fitting tribute to one of the game’s most beloved figures. As the chess world prepares for this landmark event, it is clear that Naroditsky’s impact will resonate for years to come, both in Charlotte and beyond.
