Chess Community Gathers to Honor GM Daniel Naroditsky at Inaugural Memorial Tournament
Charlotte, NC — The Charlotte Chess Center buzzed with excitement from July 3-5 as players from around the globe converged for the inaugural Naroditsky Memorial Rapid and Blitz tournament. This event not only celebrated the legacy of the late Grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky, but also showcased the vibrant chess community that he inspired.
The tournament attracted nearly 100 competitors in the Masters section and over 200 in the Challengers, a testament to the popularity of rapid and blitz formats. Among the notable participants were chess titans such as Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana, and World Championship challenger Javokhir Sindarov, alongside a host of chess streamers and past champions.
“I wanted to honor Danya,” said one participant, reflecting on his experience playing against Naroditsky in the 2024 U.S. Masters blitz. “This tournament was a chance to celebrate his contributions to chess and to enjoy a chess vacation.”
Rapid Tournament Highlights
The Rapid Swiss event kicked off on July 3, featuring seven rounds of intense competition. After a rocky start, many players found their footing, with Sindarov ultimately tying for first place with GM Aravindh Chithambaram at 6/7. Sindarov clinched the title in a playoff, showcasing his resilience.
The tournament was rife with upsets, including unexpected losses for top players like Caruana and Sindarov, who fell to rising stars such as GM Vasif Durarbayli and teenage prodigy Andy Woodward. Woodward’s standout performance included being the only player to defeat Sindarov in the rapid event.
Blitz Tournament Thrills
The excitement continued on July 4 with the Blitz Swiss, where players faced off in 11 rapid-fire rounds. The tournament was marked by surprising results, including Hikaru Nakamura’s draw against IM Irene Sukhandar and Caruana’s loss to GM Nico Chasin.
Ethan Sheehan, a non-titled player, emerged as a standout, finishing third overall in the blitz event with an impressive 8/11 score, including victories against several GMs. His performance earned him a spot in the final round robin, where he continued to impress.
The Grand Finale
The tournament culminated on July 5 with a thrilling Blitz Round Robin. Sindarov dominated the final rounds, finishing with a remarkable 7½/9 and a performance rating of 2870, while GM Wesley So secured second place. The atmosphere was electric as spectators watched the games unfold live, paying tribute to Naroditsky’s legacy.
“This tournament was a fitting tribute to Danya,” said one attendee. “His voice and insights will always resonate in the chess world.”
