Ian Nepomniachtchi Claims Victory in June 19 Freestyle Friday Championship
Ian Nepomniachtchi Triumphs in June 19 Freestyle Friday Championship
Chess.com – In a dazzling display of skill and strategy, Grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi emerged victorious in the Freestyle Friday Championship held on June 19, securing his second title of the year and third overall. With a remarkable streak of six consecutive wins, Nepomniachtchi finished the tournament with a commanding score of nine points, leaving his competitors in the dust.
The tournament featured a fierce competition, with International Master Reza Mahdavi and Grandmaster Nodirbek Yakubboev both finishing strong at 8.5 points, but tiebreaks ultimately placed Mahdavi in second and Yakubboev in third. Meanwhile, GM Amin Tabatabaei showcased his prowess by winning his last four games, finishing fourth with eight points. The women’s prize went to IM Meri Arabidze, who also made her mark in the tournament.
Despite the star-studded lineup, including Tabatabaei streaming for Freestyle Chess and Nepomniachtchi broadcasting in Russian, only four players managed to win their first three games: GMs Oleksandr Bortnyk, Conrad Holt, Igor Janik, and IM Sahib Singh. Singh’s victory over Bortnyk and Janik’s defeat of Holt propelled them to a perfect 4/4.
The fifth round proved pivotal for Janik, who, despite being a pawn down, missed a crucial opportunity that cost him another piece. Singh, aiming to maintain his perfect score, faced Yakubboev but fell short, losing in just 20 moves. This allowed Yakubboev to share the lead with NM Ethan Sheehan, both sitting at 6.5/7.
As the tournament progressed, the competition intensified. In the ninth round, Nepomniachtchi clawed his way back into contention, earning a share of the lead with a win over Sheehan. However, Yakubboev remained hot on his heels, recovering from a difficult position against GM Parham Maghsoodloo to stay in the race.
The highly anticipated matchup between Nepomniachtchi and Yakubboev in the tenth round saw Nepomniachtchi take the lead decisively. After winning an exchange and gaining a passed g-pawn, Yakubboev resigned on move 31, leaving Nepomniachtchi with a clear path to victory.
In the final round, Nepomniachtchi faced GM Sina Movahed. Despite the challenging position, he managed to secure a draw, which was enough to clinch the championship. Mahdavi, needing a win to stay close, achieved a checkmate against Maghsoodloo, securing second place.
As the tournament concluded, Nepomniachtchi took home a prize of $400, while Mahdavi and Yakubboev received $250 and $150, respectively. The excitement continues as the Freestyle Friday Championship gears up for its next tournament on June 26, where players will vie for crucial points in the lead-up to the 2027 Freestyle World Championship.
