Nepomniachtchi’s Bold Prediction: Sindarov Favored Against Gukesh in Historic World Championship Clash

Historic Clash: Gukesh vs. Sindarov Set to be Youngest World Championship Match

In a groundbreaking moment for chess, the upcoming World Championship match between reigning champion Dommaraju Gukesh and challenger Javokhir Sindarov is poised to be the youngest in history, with both players turning 20 this November. This unprecedented showdown has already captured the attention of the chess community, especially following recent comments from Russian grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi.

Speaking at the Sardinia World Chess Festival 2026, Nepomniachtchi stirred the pot with a candid assessment of Gukesh’s current form. “Based on what we saw from Gukesh last year, I believe nearly every top GM would have a very good chance in a match against him,” he stated. The two-time Candidates winner pointed out that while Gukesh has displayed flashes of brilliance, inconsistency has marred his performances across various tournaments.

Nepomniachtchi elaborated, “After the Candidates, he clinched first place, but he played poorly in the majority of tournaments. That is somewhat disturbing for his fans and coaches.” Gukesh, who made history as the youngest world champion in 2024, has recently announced a break from classical chess to focus on his preparation for the title defense, a move that has raised eyebrows among fans and analysts alike.

Sindarov: The Rising Star

In contrast, Sindarov has been on a remarkable trajectory, finishing the 2026 Candidates with a record-breaking 10 points and claiming the FIDE World Cup in Goa last year. Nepomniachtchi believes that Sindarov currently holds the edge going into the match. “If we speak about April 16 when the Candidates got over, it’s clear who the favorite is. Sindarov will win like 4 to 1,” he remarked, although he acknowledged that the months leading up to the match could dramatically alter the landscape.

The two players recently faced off in the Grand Chess Tour: Super Rapid and Blitz Poland 2026, where Gukesh won their rapid encounter, but Sindarov bounced back by winning both blitz games. However, Sindarov’s form has also seen fluctuations since the Candidates, adding an intriguing layer of uncertainty to the upcoming match.

The Road Ahead

As the chess world eagerly anticipates this historic clash, all eyes will be on both players as they navigate their preparations. Will Gukesh’s break from classical chess prove beneficial, or will Sindarov’s current hot streak carry him to victory? With the match set for November, the chess community is buzzing with speculation and excitement.

As the countdown begins, one thing is clear: this World Championship match is not just about titles; it’s about the future of chess, with two of its brightest stars ready to make history.
