Nigerian Master Tunde Onakoya Breaks Guinness World Record for Longest Chess Marathon, Raises Funds for Children’s Education

Nigerian chess master Tunde Onakoya has made history by breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon, playing for an epic 60 hours straight in New York City’s Times Square. The 29-year-old, who is also a passionate advocate for child education, hopes to raise $1 million to support children’s education initiatives across Africa.

Onakoya’s record-breaking game, played alongside American chess champion Shawn Martinez, surpassed the previous record of 56 hours, 9 minutes, and 37 seconds. The event drew a crowd of supporters, including Nigerian music star Davido, who cheered him on as he made history.

The record attempt was not just about breaking records, but about raising awareness and funds for children in need. Onakoya’s organization, Chess in Slums Africa, aims to support the education of at least 1 million children living in slums across the continent.

Despite the grueling challenge, Onakoya remained determined and energized, fueled by the support of his community and the generosity of donors. Within the first 20 hours of the attempt, $22,000 was raised, reflecting the widespread solidarity behind his noble cause.

Onakoya’s inspiring feat has garnered support from celebrities, public figures, and global leaders, all rallying behind his mission to make a difference in the lives of children across Africa. As he continues to champion the cause of education, Onakoya’s record-breaking achievement serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and the impact of a single individual’s dedication to a greater cause.
