Nihal Sarin Triumphs at Menorca Open Masters, Defeating World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju Twice
Menorca, Spain – In a stunning display of skill and strategy, Grandmaster Nihal Sarin clinched victory at the Menorca Open Masters, finishing with an impressive score of 6 out of 10. His remarkable performance included two decisive wins against reigning World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju, propelling him to a clear first place, half a point ahead of fellow GMs Ruslan Ponomariov and Richard Rapport.
The tournament, which featured a six-player double round-robin format, saw Sarin thrive under rapid time controls, earning €7,000 for his efforts. Gukesh, despite his world champion status, finished fourth with a score of 4.5 out of 10, a surprising outcome for the chess community.
Masters Section Highlights
The masters section of the tournament was characterized by intense competition and thrilling matches. Sarin’s ability to play creatively was on full display, particularly in his opening strategies. Against GM Pentala Harikrishna, he opted for the rarely played Portuguese Opening, showcasing his willingness to take risks and innovate.
Rapport, known for his sharp and imaginative play, managed to hand Sarin one of his two losses in the event, but it was Sarin’s dominance over Gukesh that truly stood out. “You’ll rarely see anyone defeat a world champion in such a dominant fashion, regardless of the time control,” remarked a chess analyst.
Open Section Results
In the open tournament, GM Abhimanyu Mishra emerged victorious, scoring 7.5 out of 9. Mishra’s performance was bolstered by a critical eighth-round victory over GM Abdimalik Abdisalimov, allowing him to secure first place on tiebreaks against three other players.
Mishra, who is best known as the youngest grandmaster in history, faced stiff competition from rising stars, including 10-year-old FM Aarit Kapil, who made headlines by becoming one of the youngest players to score an IM norm. Another young talent, CM Sarbartho Mani, also impressed by surpassing a 2300 rating and earning the FM title.

The Menorca Open has proven to be a significant event for both established grandmasters and emerging talents.
